Learning Communities
Once involved in Learning Communities at UConn,
students tend to love it, and come back for more!
Most entering students at UConn live on campus,
and most entering students also take a one-credit
class together called a First Year Experience,
or FYE, class (usually 19 students per class).
There are so many advantages when students take
the class with others on their floor in the residence
hall. Students get to know their neighbors instantly.
Friendships and a sense of community develop right
away – FYE instructors make it a priority
to set the stage for new friendships and great
experiences! Students in Learning Communities
(LC's) have all the academic opportunities, freedom
and fun of other students, and enjoy the added
academic and social benefits of taking one or
more classes with hall mates. Students choose
a theme related to their major, career interest,
or an interdisciplinary topic, and voilà!
– they're ready to settle in at UConn
from the beginning. Learning Communities will
give you a chance to spend more time in smaller
groups with faculty, staff, peer mentors, and
peers. Some communities have peer mentors or continuing
UConn students living on the floor as part of
the LC, in addition to the Community Assistant
on the floor. These students offer a wealth of
knowledge about being a successful student and
enjoying campus life at UConn. Students in Learning
Communities often come back for more – more
involvement with the LC, more living in the LC,
more mentoring of other students, more volunteering
with peers on community outreach projects, and
more enjoying activities, events, and clubs. We
encourage all students to consider this opportunity
early in their planning since space is limited,
and we can't always accommodate everyone on our
waiting lists.
